earth by serena mitnik-miller

Always amazed at Serena’s work.  Here is a new project that she is involved in with Planet Magazine, entitled Earth by…. So beautiful.  Pick up a print here and read more about this project below.

The concept is a simple one: invite notable contemporary artists to create art pieces that portray their personal artistic interpretation of Earth. The results have been spectacular: unique images that exhibit the imaginative vision of today’s artists and the vast range of forms, motifs, and complex human sentiment that our planet can inspire. This is especially noteworthy during our era of unprecedented awareness about the world and human civilization’s impact on it.

slack water

Local Portland photographer and fellow hand-planer Mark Marchesi celebrates the colors and ongoing changes of Maine’s waterfront with his newest collection Slack Water, opening tomorrow night at Space Gallery.

Here is a bit more info:

Photographer Mark Marchesi spent the summer of 1999 at a shellfish wholesaler on Portland’s waterfront, continuing a life-long interest in marine boating and fishing. He began taking pictures of this unique remnant of Maine’s industrial heritage, and in 2008 began a concerted series documenting the rough beauty of Portland’s wharves, facilities and their workers. Special zoning and respect for marine-derived economy have helped preserve the character of this part of the city, keeping development in check. Yet change is inevitable, and how the Portland community chooses to manage the relationship between the old and the new will be an ongoing conversation for years to come. Marchesi’s crisp photographs find color, beauty and vibrancy that’s still very much alive in this important area that goes unseen by so many of us.

Please take some time to check out this colorful and insightful look into our cherished waterfront. If you cannot make it to the opening the show runs through May 26th or you can view the collection on Mark’s site, markmarchesi.com.  Mark also builds some great hand planes that are available in our online shop here.

handmade books are rad

very soon we will be carrying some beautifully hand made books by artist jessica pope. they are created using covers from old books and reconstructed with 48 crisp, kraft paper pages then stitched up using coordinated, high quality thread. each one is 100% unique.

we love journals, at the shop we don’t have any fancy forms, memos or spreadsheets-  we use handmade journals for everything-  just seems to make it more fun.

until the books arrive, here are some photos.  enjoy and happy saturday.
