Vessel is a collection of work that explores the many forms of a vessel; a ship, a found object, the human body, and even a skateboard deck. Each vessel that Finch has created for this collection represents a story, a factual event in our history, a reminder of the past and a reminder of how far we have come ~ yet how far we need to go.
Finch finds inspiration where most people would not consider looking for it: in junk yards, vacant lots, and alleys. He seeks to encounter what most people try to avoid, collecting what has been lost, forgotten, broken, ignored, and rejected. “Yesterdays Girl,” featured on the shows promotional poster, was made mostly created from piano parts. The sails, made from music sheets, represent a conversation between a dangerous man and a suspecting woman. They are connected by the movement of the rigging, creating a speechless conversation showcasing the many underlying details within Finch’s intricate work rewritten by every new admirer. Viewing his sculptures, we are reminded of the multiple possibilities of life and of the principles of rearrangement and reorganization that keep our perspectives fresh and ever-changing.
Finch has exhibited at various galleries, including Channel 1 Gallery, Silvermine Gallery, and Artspace of New Haven. Finch was recently awarded the Mollie and Albert Jacobson Award for Sculpture in 2010, and continues to be revered as one of today’s most unique contemporary sculpture artists.
